(andPOP) - VHS tapes are virtually obsolete. HD TVs are taking over. Cell phones are getting smaller. And pretty soon, Hollywood could see a revolution in movie making technology.

Famed director Bruce McDonald has created quite the buzz with his latest film “Pontypool” which will have its World Premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September. The director shot the film entirely using the new Red One 4k HD Camera, making it not only the first full length Canadian feature film of this format but also the first “Red” feature to ever screen at TIFF.

While McDonald is getting noticed for the positive rumblings surrounding the content of the film, people can’t stop talking about use of The Red One Camera since its use has been heavily debated among industry insiders.

The technology could potentially replace traditional 35mm filmmaking as it essentially makes the process easier. No film or tape stock is required and footage is instantly saved on a digital memory card.

“It wasn’t an easy decision for Bruce” says Producer Jeffrey Coghlan, “we conducted Red and 35mm comparison tests prior literally couldn’t tell the difference”.

Macdonald’s film is already generating discussion and will surely only see more buzz ones it debuts at TIFF. The festival is famous for supporting independent filmmakers and many films go on to Oscar-glory.

McDonald calls TIFF “his favorite, the best and most important film festival in the world” and can’t wait to unveil “Pontypool.”

The film is about a has been radio host (McHattie) who takes the only job he can find which is broadcasting from the basement of a church in the small town of Pontypool. Strange things start happening when a virus quickly takes over the town and causes violent and erratic behaviour from its inhabitants. It was adapted from the novel “Pontypool Changes Everything” written by Tony Burgess.

Coghlan is already hailing the film as “a real mind-blower. A scary, thriller and a real departure for Bruce who certainly delivers.”
